ExpressVPN is a top-rated VPN service based in the British Virgin Islands. While VPN services are a dime a dozen in what is otherwise a highly competitive industry, Express VPN has found a way to stand out. One way it does that is by delivering a large number of features that matter.
As it currently stands the company has a network of over 3000 servers across 94 countries and 148 cities. These countries and cities include those in the US, Europe, and Asia. Additionally, unlike other services we have tested ExpressVPN offers a strict no-logging policy (more about that below).
We have been using ExpressVPN for a while and below are our thoughts about the service. Make sure to read the full review as we also describe a nifty little method you can use to get 3-months of service for free.
No Logging Policy – Confirmed!
Now it is one thing for a VPN service to claim that they don’t maintain logs, but it is another if it is confirmed. Back in December 2017, there was news that the authorities in Turkey seized servers belonging to ExpressVPN. The authorities were trying to get the company’s customer data as part of an investigation into the death of a Russian ambassador.
Not surprisingly there was no data to be obtained since the company didn’t and did not maintain logs. If anything it is confirmation that ExpressVPN is committed to keeping customer identity and information safe by strictly enforcing their no-logging policy even in a country like Turkey.
ExpressVPN uses SHA-512 HMAC authentication coupled with AES 256-bit cipher along with a 4096-bit RSA key encryption. Perfect Forward Secrecy feature is used through the Diffie-Hellman key exchange. The service’s encryption is considered unbreakable!
The “Kill Switch” is also called the “Network Lock” by Express VPN. The so-called network lock is intended to keep the data secure when the internet connection drops by blocking traffic. The feature is designed to ensure that your network is always protected. It is available on apps for Mac OS, Linux, Windows and on Routers.
During our testing, the network lock feature worked as promised on both our Windows and Mac OS computers. We noticed if there is an issue with the internet connection, the app will display a notice saying that there is something wrong with the connection and that the Network Lock is blocking traffic.
Split Tunneling Feature
The split tunneling feature is available for the service’s Mac OS and Windows apps. It allows you to choose which programs use the VPN tunnel and which can easily bypass it to use regular internet.
By default, the feature is turned off but can be activated by going to ‘settings’ and turning it on from there. Though by default all traffic is directly routed through the VPN. The settings give you a number of different options:
When you click either of the options, a pop-up will appear allowing you to select the apps. In our experience, it is one of the best ways to ensure that your connection is secure yet not arouse any suspicions with the ISP. Plus, those on a slower connection can choose which apps can use the VPN like for instance, Skype can use the VPN tunnel, but web browsing can be done as usual by bypassing the VPN.
In our experience reviewing VPN services, we have run into many VPNs that don’t successfully unblock Netflix. So, finding a service that does unblock Netflix is rare. Fortunately, ExpressVPN saves the day.
The issue we faced and we are sure that others will face too is that not all servers are compatible with Netflix. Also, there isn’t one button that you can click and see or connect to a Netflix compatible server. So, be prepared for some trial and error especially when using non-US servers. However, servers in the US, UK, and Canada worked fine with Netflix.
Customer support is a big deal for VPN users especially since it gives them the peace of mind that someone will help when needed. Unfortunately, similar to other VPN services we tested there isn’t a customer service number you can call. However, they have a pretty good live chat feature.
Live chat is available 24/7 and is available directly via ExpressVPN’s website. It takes around two minutes on average to connect with a customer service rep.
During our testing, we connected with customer service multiple times and asked them a battery of questions. Apart from a few highly technical ones, we got answers to each question we asked. By industry standards that’s pretty darn good!
ExpressVPN offers what we like to label a winning combination of excellent speeds, superior performance, and reliability. Plus, its ever-expanding VPN network with new servers added almost every few months means that things are only getting better. We also like the fact that ExpressVPN provides uncrackable, top-of-the-line military-grade encryption, and split tunneling. All of which means that you can continue using the internet and a VPN at the same time. That said above everything else ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money back guarantee. The only downside for some people will be the comparatively higher prices. However, we have you covered here! Get 3-month free by just clicking the link. Now there is one more reason to start using ExpressVPN or switch to it if you’re not using it already.
