Does NordVPN Allow P2P Torrenting?

Yes. NordVPN supports P2P traffic on all of its standard servers. Its current support documentation also covers popular clients including qBittorrent, BitTorrent, uTorrent, Deluge, and Vuze. Use P2P only for files you are authorized to download or share: NordVPN says its service must not be used to bypass copyright regulations, and a VPN does not make infringement legal.

 

How to Use NordVPN for Torrenting

It is not difficult to use NordVPN for lawful torrenting. Follow these basic steps before opening your torrent client:

1. Install NordVPN

Before anything else, install NordVPN on your device. First, purchase a subscription and create an account. Then download the correct application from its website and install it.

The installation steps vary by operating system. NordVPN provides current setup guides for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Chromebook, supported streaming devices, and compatible routers.

 

2. Start NordVPN Before Starting your Torrent Client

Open NordVPN and wait until the app confirms that it is connected before starting your torrent client. This helps keep P2P traffic off your normal connection. A VPN does not make downloaded files safe, so avoid untrusted files and keep your software updated.

 

3. Activate Kill Switch

Confirm that NordVPN’s kill switch is enabled before opening your torrent client. Behavior varies by operating system. On Windows, the Internet Kill Switch is disabled by default, while the App Kill Switch can close selected programs after a disconnect. Check the instructions for your app version.

A kill switch blocks unprotected traffic if the VPN connection is interrupted. Choose system-wide protection when available, or add the torrent client to the App Kill Switch. It does not protect against malicious files, phishing, or every other threat.

5. Verify for Leaks

Once connected, verify that websites see the VPN server’s IP rather than your normal public IP. For a torrent-specific check, IPLeak.net provides Torrent Address detection; NordVPN’s current setup guides use it to check the address visible to peers.

If your normal public IP appears in the torrent test, close the torrent client, disconnect, and troubleshoot the VPN setup. Do not resume P2P traffic until the test shows the VPN or proxy address you intended to use.

 

6. Start Torrent Client and Download Torrent

The final step is to open your torrent client and add a torrent or magnet link for content you are allowed to download. NordVPN documents use with uTorrent, qBittorrent, Deluge, Vuze, and BitTorrent, while the full VPN app routes traffic from most other P2P clients as well.

 

Is NordVPN Good and Safe for P2P Torrenting?

NordVPN is a solid choice for lawful P2P traffic when configured correctly. No VPN makes torrenting risk-free or an unauthorized download legal. NordVPN operates from Panama, but its privacy case depends on its no-logs policy, independent assurance work, app security, and your configuration, not jurisdiction alone. Other providers restrict P2P to a handful of servers; VPN Unlimited is one example.

No Logs Policy, Security Features

NordVPN publishes a no-logs policy that has undergone repeated independent assurance engagements. Its sixth engagement was conducted by Deloitte Lithuania at the end of 2025 and announced on February 3, 2026. The engagement supported NordVPN’s claim that its standard VPN service is configured not to record browsing activity or traffic logs.

NordVPN does not have a perfect security history. An attacker accessed one rented server in Finland in March 2018 through a remote-management system left by the data center. NordVPN says the server held no activity logs or user credentials, although the attacker obtained an expired TLS key. NordVPN was notified in April 2019 and publicly disclosed the incident later that year.

NordVPN later added a public bug-bounty program. Cure53 assessed its apps and systems in 2025 and reported no critical vulnerabilities. Those steps improve scrutiny but cannot rule out a future vulnerability or breach.

Besides its kill switch, NordVPN offers features including Threat Protection, split tunneling, Double VPN, and NordLynx. Availability varies by operating system and plan. Meshnet also still exists. NordVPN announced its retirement in August 2025, then reversed the decision after user feedback. Current 2026 support pages say Meshnet remains supported for device linking, remote access, traffic routing, and file sharing. It is not the same as routing public torrent traffic through a NordVPN server.

NordVPN’s regular VPN service and Dedicated IP add-on do not support port forwarding. A separate Dedicated Server product introduced in 2026 does, but it is not the normal consumer VPN or the Dedicated IP add-on.
