How ExpressVPN’s ad blocker works

ExpressVPN does not inspect a web page and erase individual visual elements in the way a browser extension can. Instead, its apps run a DNS-based traffic blocker using lists of known advertising, tracking, malicious, and adult-content hosts. ExpressVPN says those lists are compiled from public open-source sources.

The process is straightforward:

1. You enable Block ads in the app’s Advanced Protection controls.
2. An app or website tries to contact a third-party host to retrieve an ad.
3. ExpressVPN compares that host with its blocklists while your traffic uses the VPN connection.
4. If the host is listed, ExpressVPN prevents the connection, so the ad request fails.

This approach works beyond one browser. Requests made by other apps on the protected device can also be filtered when they use the ExpressVPN connection. How to enable ad blocking in ExpressVPN

The wording and location can differ slightly by app version, but the safe setup is the same:

1. Update the ExpressVPN app. An old release may not show the current Advanced Protection controls.
2. Open Advanced Protection. Some app layouts surface an Ad & Tracker Blocker shortcut on the main VPN screen.
3. Enable Block ads. Turn on the tracker and malicious-site controls separately if you want those filters too.
4. Connect to ExpressVPN. Then close and reopen the affected browser tab or app so it makes fresh requests through the protected connection.
5. Troubleshoot one control at a time. If a legitimate page or app stops working, disable the ad setting temporarily and reload. If that does not help, restore it and test the tracker or malicious-site setting instead.
