Is ExpressVPN Good and Safe for Torrenting in 2026?
ExpressVPN allows P2P across its network and includes Network Lock, but it does not offer VPN-server port forwarding. See setup, limitations, and alternatives.
ExpressVPN is good for torrenting if you want a VPN that needs little P2P-specific setup. It permits P2P traffic on every server and includes a kill switch, but it does not support port forwarding through its VPN servers.
Our roster score is 9.5/10, reflecting ExpressVPN’s strong overall privacy and usability package. That does not make torrenting anonymous or turn unauthorized sharing into lawful activity: use P2P only for files you have the right to download or distribute, and check the rules where you live.

What ExpressVPN offers for P2P in 2026
P2P works on every server
You do not need to find an ExpressVPN server labeled for torrenting. Independent 2026 coverage from Top10VPN, vpnMentor, CNET, and Cloudwards consistently reports that every server supports P2P traffic. ExpressVPN also maintains its own uTorrent guidance.
That makes server selection simple: connect to a nearby location before opening your torrent client. A shorter route will often be the sensible starting point, although download speed still depends on your connection, server load, the torrent’s peers, and the client configuration. We found no reason to publish an invented speed figure or an unverifiable server total.
Network Lock protects against a dropped tunnel
ExpressVPN calls its kill switch Network Lock. The provider says it blocks IPv4, IPv6, and DNS traffic outside the encrypted tunnel on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android when the VPN connection fails. For torrenting, that matters because a client may otherwise reconnect through your regular internet connection.
Keep split tunneling off unless you have a clear reason to use it. If it is enabled, confirm that the torrent client is assigned to the VPN rather than the bypass list. Excluding the client would expose its traffic to your normal connection by design.
There is one Windows-specific detail for users who bind a torrent client to a network interface. ExpressVPN’s May 2026 support guidance says Lightway Turbo can make the expected VPN adapter unavailable to apps that rely on binding. Disable Lightway Turbo if your client cannot see the VPN interface, then repeat the disconnect test described below.
The no-logs claim has useful nuance
ExpressVPN’s privacy policy says it does not record online activity, browsing history, traffic destinations, data content, or DNS queries. It also says it does not collect your source IP address or the outgoing VPN IP assigned to you.
This is not the same as collecting no operational data at all. ExpressVPN records whether an app established a connection on a particular day, the selected VPN location, and the originating country and ISP, but not the precise connection time or source IP. That distinction is more informative than the label “no logs” on its own.
KPMG examined ExpressVPN’s controls in a 2025 engagement and provided reasonable assurance that the systems worked as described, with no identified issues in the safeguards against activity logging. An audit strengthens a privacy claim; it cannot guarantee how every future app version or account will behave.
How to set up ExpressVPN for torrenting

- Install the official app. Download ExpressVPN for your operating system, sign in, and update it before configuring the torrent client. The core VPN is included across ExpressVPN’s current subscription tiers, so a more expensive bundle is not required just for P2P.
- Enable Network Lock. Open the VPN settings and make sure the internet kill switch is on. Leave split tunneling disabled, or explicitly route the torrent client through the VPN.
- Close the torrent client. Connect ExpressVPN before launching any P2P app. Choose a nearby server rather than hunting for a special torrenting location; all servers allow P2P.
- Bind the client if it supports binding. Select the VPN network interface inside the torrent client’s advanced settings. On Windows, disable Lightway Turbo first if the interface is missing. Interface names can change after a protocol switch or app update, so recheck the setting after either event.
- Verify the route. Confirm that your public IP differs from the one shown when ExpressVPN is disconnected. Check for DNS leaks, then use a lawful test torrent whose source and distribution rights are clear.
- Test a disconnect. While the lawful test transfer is active, interrupt the VPN connection. The transfer should stop and remain stopped. If it continues, close the torrent client and correct Network Lock, split tunneling, or interface binding before trying again.
- Disconnect in the right order. Pause or close the torrent client first, then disconnect ExpressVPN. This avoids a brief fallback to the ordinary connection at the end of a session.
These steps reduce accidental IP exposure, but no setup can promise anonymity. A VPN protects the route between your device and its server; your torrent client, downloaded files, account activity, and device security remain separate risks.
Limits and honest drawbacks

The biggest limitation is port forwarding. ExpressVPN’s own documentation says its VPN servers do not support it. Its router software can forward ports, but those forwarded connections sit outside the VPN tunnel and do not receive VPN protection. Opening a router port therefore does not solve the missing VPN-side feature.
You can still download and seed without port forwarding. The tradeoff is that you may accept fewer inbound peer connections, which can matter to long-term seeders and users of ratio-sensitive private trackers. If a forwarded VPN port is a purchase requirement, choose a provider that explicitly supplies one.
Price is the second drawback. At US checkout on July 14, 2026, ExpressVPN displayed a Basic two-year promotion billed at $69.72 for the first 28 months, followed by automatic renewal at $99.95 per year. When rechecked on July 23, 2026, ExpressVPN’s own refund pages named different promotional exclusions. Do not treat the guarantee as part of an order unless the live checkout and purchase confirmation say it is eligible. Check both the total and refund terms because offers change.
ExpressVPN has also been part of Kape Technologies since 2021. Ownership does not negate the published privacy policy or audit evidence, but it is relevant context because Kape also owns other VPN brands, including Private Internet Access.
Alternatives if ExpressVPN is a poor fit
Private Internet Access is the more flexible choice if you specifically need a forwarded port. PIA lets you request port forwarding on selected servers and enter the assigned port in a compatible torrent client. Our Private Internet Access torrenting guide covers the full setup. Its drawback here is ownership diversity: PIA and ExpressVPN are both Kape brands. See our full Private Internet Access review before choosing it.
Proton VPN is the clearer alternative if you want port forwarding without choosing another Kape-owned service. Proton says its P2P servers support port forwarding, but P2P is limited to paid plans rather than its free tier. Setup also requires choosing a P2P-capable server and putting the assigned port into your client. Read our full Proton VPN review for the wider tradeoffs.
Our pick
ExpressVPN is our pick for uncomplicated torrenting: every server permits P2P, Network Lock covers connection failures, and the logging policy has meaningful audit evidence behind it. FAQ
Does ExpressVPN allow torrenting on every server?
Yes. ExpressVPN does not make you select a special P2P category; torrenting is supported across its server network. Connect to a nearby location before opening the torrent client, then verify the public IP and kill-switch behavior rather than assuming the route is correct.
Does ExpressVPN support port forwarding for torrents?
No. ExpressVPN’s VPN servers do not provide port forwarding. Router-level forwarding in ExpressVPN’s router software sends that forwarded traffic outside the VPN tunnel, so it is not an equivalent workaround. Consider PIA or a paid Proton VPN plan if a forwarded VPN port is essential.
Which ExpressVPN server should I use for torrenting?
Start with a nearby server because all ExpressVPN servers permit P2P. A geographically close route may reduce avoidable latency, but the health of the torrent and the number of available peers can matter more than switching between distant VPN locations.
Is torrenting with ExpressVPN legal?
Torrenting is a file-transfer method, and lawful uses include sharing open-source software and public-domain media. Downloading or distributing copyrighted material without permission may violate local law and ExpressVPN’s terms prohibit content that infringes third-party intellectual-property rights. A VPN does not change those rules, so use authorized sources and check the law where you live.
