Formula 1 GP Monte Carlo - Circuit de Monaco

GP Monte Carlo: From May 26 to 28, 2023, the seventh round of this year's Formula One season will take place in glamorous Monaco. Interestingly, Sebastian Vettel, a long-time hopeful for the German world championship title, will not be racing this year. The talented racing driver from Heppenheim had already announced in 2022 that he would not contest another season in Formula 1.

GP Monte Carlo: The track

The Circuit de Monaco is a temporary race track that winds through the picturesque neighborhoods of Monte Carlo and La Condamine in Monaco. Each year, numerous city streets are closed for the famous Monaco Grand Prix. It's an elaborate process that involves temporarily removing traffic signs and flower planters. The 3.337-kilometer circuit is lined with pit lanes, guardrails, mobile fences and impressive grandstands. There are a total of 19 challenging corners that make the racing exciting.

During the race, a total of 78 laps will be completed, which corresponds to a distance of 260 kilometers.

Due to the layout of the street circuit, the race track offers only limited run-off areas and is therefore one of the most dangerous on the Formula One calendar, despite the comparatively lower average speeds compared to other circuits. Former world champion Nelson Piquet once compared driving on the Monaco circuit to flying a helicopter in your living room, while two-time Monaco winner David Coulthard described it as pure madness . This tradition-steeped circuit presents an enormous challenge to drivers and winning at Monaco is considered an extraordinary achievement. It requires precision, courage and the ability to perform at the limits of what is possible.

Another feature is the pit lane, which is special because of the special conditions in Monaco. Unlike permanent circuits, the pit lane was not planned from the outset, which is why it is very narrow and forces teams to make compromises when it comes to accommodating their equipment. The pit building is located right next to the start-finish straight, while the pit lane has run along the back of it since 2004. This spatial arrangement requires teams and drivers to be particularly adaptable and dexterous during pit stops.

History of the Circuit de Monaco

The legendary Circuit de Monaco was first used in 1929 for the Monaco Grand Prix, organized as part of a race hosted by the Automobile Club de Monaco. In 1950, Formula One engines sounded in the streets of Monaco for the first time, and the Principality briefly became part of the Formula One racing calendar. Juan Manuel Fangio, an Argentinean racing driver, secured victory in the premiere race. However, five years passed before the second Formula One Grand Prix was held in Monaco in 1955. Since then, the Monaco Grand Prix has become a permanent fixture on the racing calendar.

Where to after GP Monte Carlo?

After the exciting GP Monte Carlo (Monaco Grad Prix), the Formula One teams now have a week to prepare for the next Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Before that, after all, they were at the Grand Prix in Italy-Imola.
